Unique Kugeri Stands on Little Diomede Island
By Timothy Sczawinski
Because of climate and type of materials used, many examples of traditional Alaska
Native housing have disappeared. On the Island of Little Diomede in the Bering Straits,
a kugeri stands which has for generations protected its inhabitants from some of the
severest weather on earth. This article first appeared in "The Northern Engineer"
and is excerpted from the May 1982 issue of "Now in the North."
