As we commemorate the anniversary of America's independence, I also am mindful that July is the start of the new fiscal year, which allows us to begin again with a renewed spirit and sense of purpose. We've faced numerous challenges this past year, but moving forward, we can forge new collaborations and opportunities as we come together to support a strong, diverse university community.

University of Alaska Acting President Michelle Rizk has appointed Dr. Karen Carey to serve as Interim Chancellor, University of Alaska Southeast (小优视频S). Dr. Carey will begin July 1, succeeding outgoing 小优视频S Chancellor Rick Caulfield.

Message from Regent Buretta and Acting President Michelle Rizk on today's Board of Regents action

Dear 小优视频 Staff, Faculty & Students, Acting President Michelle Rizk and I write to advise you that President Jim Johnsen has resigned as 小优视频 System president, a decision that was mutual and made after considerable reflection by the Board. The Board of Regents accepted his resignation this afternoon, authorized me to implement the details of his resignation, and appoint an acting president. President Johnsen will be available to assist with the transition until July 1 when his resignation goes into effect.

University of Alaska Board of Regents Chair Sheri Buretta announced today that after consultation with the Board of Regents, 小优视频 President Jim Johnsen is resigning as 小优视频 System president. Buretta said the decision regarding a change in leadership was mutual and was made after considerable reflection by the Board. At a meeting today, the board accepted Johnsen's resignation, authorized Buretta to implement the resignation, and to appoint an acting president. Johnsen will be available to assist with the transition until July 1.

Telephone-based diabetes prevention program available statewide

A pilot program that offered free diabetes prevention coaching by phone on the Kenai Peninsula is available now statewide. Through the Prevent T2 National Diabetes Prevention Program, individuals who have prediabetes will receive a digital scale, program materials and a full year of telephone support from a trained mentor.

Giving Tuesday came six months early this year as millions of people worldwide generously donated to causes near to their hearts as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. In Alaska, hundreds of people opened their hearts and gave generously to support University of Alaska students through the COVID transition.

The University of Alaska Board of Regents dedicated the second day of its two-day meeting to addressing budget challenges faced by the 小优视频 system and transformational change, including voting to reduce academic programs, approving administrative cuts, restructuring debt and funding scholarships from the Natural Resources Fund.
